Hans-Joachim Horstmann was born in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia, in 1929. Since 1945, he has been living in Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany. 1948 beginning of studies in Biology, Chemistry and Geography at the University of Erlangen. 1955 doctoral degree as Dr. phil.nat.. In the following, he worked as a lecturer and scientist at the Institute of Biochemistry at the Medical Faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. After his retirement, he worked as a sculptor, painter and graphic artist. He acquired his artistic and technical education in various special courses and by self-education. He made several study trips to Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland. Since 1980, his art work has been shown in a number of solo and group exhibitions of fine arts in Erlangen, Nuremberg, Jena, Munich. Leipzig, Bamberg, Karlovac, Budapest, Florence and Homburg. In 2005, he was awarded a prize for sculpture at the Biennale Internazionale dell´Arte Contemporanea at Florence, Italy.
