Robert Wendel is a photographer from Germany. It began with drawing in a folk art circle – anatomy in the academic style and participation in exhibitions in Berlin, Warsaw and Moscow. Then, in the early 80s, the professional change to the theater: Volksbühne Berlin as a stage technician, via the municipal theaters of Wittenberg and Freiberg to the Deutsches Theater Berlin as an assistant stage designer. In addition and later freelance as a stage and costume designer in Dresden, Cottbus, Heidelberg, Schwedt, Anklam, Duisburg, Greifswald, Luxembourg, Halle. Photography is for me a sum of drawing, theater and architecture. My black room reminds me of the stage of the theater.

The people I portray are mainly actors, dancers, models and other artists, who always bring in their own ideas. After years of following a rather strict, matter-of-fact line, I have recently developed an increasing taste for interesting spaces and working with the group. The collaboration with the make-up artist or make-up artist, as well as the dialogue with other artists, for example with a painter, is becoming more and more important to me. Increasingly, digital image processing and, after many years of restriction to black and white, color are gaining in importance for me. The artistic act is for me primarily the omission of distracting accessories and the complete, loving attention to the portrayed person.
